School Clothes Swap Meet – August 7th – Josey Ranch Lake Library

I know you have heard of recycle, right? This event is about exchanging outgrown school clothes for larger sizes……FREECYCLE.

How does it work? You bring in any school size clothes from first grade to high school and get a ticket to receive an equal amount in the exact size you need. In other words, bring in one item, take one item home. Forget the tax free weekend…..this is just plain FREE. School Supplies and backpacks also welcome.

Location: Josey Lake Ranch Library

Time: Drop off items from 10:00am to 3:30pm and then pick up from 4:00-5:30pm

Volunteers are welcome to help sort clothes. Receipts can be provided should you just want to donate clothes to CCA. All clothes not selected will be donated to Christian Community Action who has a new location at 3050 N. Josey Lane at Frankford. Any books will be donated to the library.

Please NO socks or undergarments. NO toys can be accepted due to recall issues.

All items must be suitable for continued wear and laundered before bringing. Volunteers will be reviewing all items and have the right to refuse any item.

BUILD and RACE your corrugated dream boat!

Have FUN, and WIN great prizes!

Amateur boat builders of all ages are challenged to design, build and navigate boats made entirely of corrugated cardboard.

Spectators are encouraged to bevy to this event to see courageous crews race the brine shrimp of Thomas Pool!

The Rules

Have Fun – Safely!
Boat hulls must be constructed entirely of recycled corrugated cardboard. Any thickness of cardboard is permitted. Caulking and duck tape may be used, but only in seams and edges. CANNOT USE the following: waxed cardboard, carpet tubes and barrels, two-part epoxy glue, fiberglass, plastic, wood, rubber, foam, cellular, paint or flotation materials are not allowed in hull construction! The boat must float because it is a boat, not because it contains materials that float!
At least 50% of the hull exterior must be corrugated cardboard only. No wrapping of the entire hull with duct tape, plastic, shrink-wrap, or other materials!
Boats are to be propelled by oars, paddles, or sails and must hold one person. Oars, paddles, sails, mast, steering devices, propulsion systems and attachments of these devices/systems may be constructed of materials other than cardboard. No poling (as in using long poles to push your boat). No motors allowed!
Crew must retrieve all boat parts/pieces from the water at the conclusion of the race.
If you have any questions, refer to Rule #1 !
Violators of these rules shall be branded “pirates” and stripped of any awards.

Event starts at 9:00am promptly. We will determine races based on age and number of participants.

Don’t have a clue how to build a boat…..just google it, there are thousands of pages and pictures on how to do it.

Lots of exciting things are happening! The work day to complete Phase I, has been set for Saturday, February 27, with two shifts, 9-12 a.m. and 1-4 p.m (weather permitting). On Saturday we plan on building and preparing the beds for Phase I. All the beds in this phase are spoken for and we are taking names for the waiting list for Phase II. Any work not completed on Saturday will be finished in the afternoon of Sunday, February 28.

Anyone who would like to help with the work party is invited to come and see the work in progress. Please bring tools (shovels, rigid rakes, wheel barrows, cordless power drills, black and white newspapers or cardboard). Don’t forget to wear boots and bring your garden gloves. It might be muddy!

We have several scout troops who have volunteered to help with various elements of the garden plans. Prospective Eagle Scouts are planning to build the fence and garden gate, compost bins, a storage shed, the children’s beds, a gazebo, handicap-accessible beds, and some of our garden beds. Scouts are also making the plaques for the numbering of the beds. Thank you to our boy and girl scouts! We are so appreciative of all your help.

The board met on Wednesday, Jan. 27 and decided to plan for a late February work party to start putting the garden plots together. We are starting to get commitments from businesses in our community. Check out our sponsor list on this page.

Because we’re starting from scratch and putting together all the materials and supplies to get the garden up an going will be costly, we are soliciting donations. Any contributions can be mailed to Keep Carrollton Beautiful, c/o The Giving Garden of Carrollton, PO Box 111175, Carrollton, TX 75011.

Gardeners are beginning to sign up for their garden plots. The plots will be 4′ by 20′ and will cost $25. Half plots will be available to $15. If interested, please follow the link at the bottom of this page.

Spring is just around the corner. Time to start planning the garden!

Give to the Giving Garden

Your local community garden is about to sprout! The Giving Garden of Carrollton is located near the intersection of Hebron Parkway and Old Denton Road, just south of the Krogers and behind the Aldersgate UMC.
The goals and objectives of the community garden are to provide a sustainable community garden opportunity for the citizens of Carrollton and to provide donations of produce tor local charitable organizations.? In support of these goals gardeners will donate fifty (50) percent of their produce to local charitable organizations. ?The Giving Garden gardners will find a welcoming environment with infrastructure provided to support their gardening goals. ?Individual beds, 4′ x 20′ feet, are available for a $25 annual fee. Half beds are also available.? Tax deductible cash contributions may be made through Keep Carrollton Beautiful.

A Community Garden for Carrollton

With the assistance of Aldersgate United Methodist Church, Keep Carrollton Beautiful, the City of Carrollton, and numerous volunteers, Carrollton’s first community garden is taking shape. The garden will be located behind Aldersgate UMC, 3926 Old Denton Road, between the church and Kroger (at the corner of Old Denton and Hebron).

The mission of the garden is to grow community, food and knowledge. The voluntary board is meeting regularly to establish procedures and prepare for a planned spring opening. Any interested person(s) will be invited to fill out an application for a plot as long as the space is available. Fifty percent (50) of the food grown in the garden will be donated to a local service organization to assist those in need in our community.

The board is now pursuing donations from local businesses to meet the needs of establishing the garden plots. A local boy scout who is working on his Eagle badge is offering enormous assistance in building our fence and compost bins.
